What US government agency is antiquated and not up to date in communications, management principles, and professional development? Maybe there is more than one but the one under discussion on Chuck Harder’s show, For the People, is the US Customs and Border Patrol. Chuck’s guest is Professor Robert Lee Maril, head of the Sociology Department at East Carolina University. He is also the author of several books; the latest is Patrolling Chaos: The US Border Patrol in Deep South Texas. Maril spent two years going on patrol with Border Agents in South Texas to see first hand what was transpiring on our border between America and Mexico. What he found is disturbing to say the least: tons of illegal drugs, an average of 500 illegal immigrants die each year, not to mention the risk to the agents. It is an open border, says Maril. “There is no border except in the minds of politicians.” Chuck asks Maril how President Bush can let this problem go on and Maril’s response is that it continues so to keep corporations happy with low-wage workers. When you listen to this podcast be sure to keep your ears open for the story of the traveling elephant.
